MATERIALS

Thoughtfully selected. Purposefully made.

Material is considered an essential element of our design process at Jules & Stone. Every compound is selected according to form, texture, durability, light diffusion, finish, and intended aesthetic use.

SUSTAINABLE POLYMERS

Materials Made for Modern Objects

Jules & Stone uses digitally fabricated polymers and carefully selected technical materials chosen specifically for the aesthetic and structural requirements of each individual home object.

PLA & PLA-Based Materials

PLA, or polylactic acid, is a bio-based polymer made from plant-derived sugars commonly sourced from crops such as corn and sugarcane. Through fermentation, these sugars are converted into lactic acid and refined into a precise, high-performance material ideal for sculptural digital fabrication. We value PLA for its fine detail, clean finishes, and ability to create refined, modern forms.

Material specifications may vary by product. Individual product pages identify the materials used whenever applicable.

PHOTOMETRIC CRAFT

Designed Around Light

Lighting materials are selected not only structurally, but for the precise way they interact with light. Translucent shades, custom textures, and layered surfaces soften, diffuse, and shape the glow to create warm ambient illumination.

METHODOLOGY

Why Digital Fabrication

Complex Forms

Material Efficiency

Small-Batch Production

Design Flexibility

Enables fluid, sculptural shapes that would be exceptionally difficult or impossible to produce using traditional subtractive techniques.

Pieces are built additively layer by layer, generating virtually zero cutting waste and maximizing raw material utility throughout production.

Allows our San Francisco studio to craft products intentionally on demand instead of maintaining massive industrial warehouse inventories.

Lets forms, delicate textures, and proportions evolve through rapid digital iteration before finalizing every production run.

Design

Prototype

Fabrication

Forms are developed digitally with precise geometric curvature and optical light diffusion calculations.

Proportions, surface textures, and physical light interaction are evaluated through iterative studio modeling.

Components are produced layer by layer, with complex lighting forms requiring 10 to 20+ hours of precision printing.

Finishing

Testing

Parts are carefully inspected, hand-cleaned, refined, and meticulously assembled by studio craftspeople in San Francisco.

Completed objects undergo strict quality control and functional electrical testing prior to studio packaging and fulfillment.

Made with intention.
